Hey all,
Intrigued by the title, right?
My name is Neeraj Sachdeva, though I have often changed and mangled it to Raj, or Prince, or anything that has a nice ring to it! I am a firm believer in the unique value proposition, and I represent myself, as a product and service at all times!
I believe that we should value our time a lot, and I value mine. So I am glad that you are taking some time out to read my introduction, and my reasons for being here, in the Online Marketing MBA program.
I turned 26 a month ago, and will be starting a PhD soon. Truth be told, it wasn’t an easy decision, primarily because there isn’t enough money in it. Most people I have spoken to have dissuaded me against doing a PhD, especially since it postpones the inevitable – getting a job! Ha! I laugh in the face of adversity.
For long I have been of a conservative nature, hiding in a cocoon surrounded by whatever is closest and comfortable. Even when I spent 7 long and awesome years in UK, I found myself returning to the same places, meeting the same people and eating the same food all the time. Change is good, and change is inevitable – I really subscribe to this school of thought now! So why not go with it?
So just last week, I moved from hot and humid India to cold and COLD Finland. I like the challenge, it is a great place to study, and it is a totally different culture – both to India and the UK. But now more than ever, I need to establish myself.
So why Internet Marketing?
Well, my PhD research is very social in nature. I plan to use technology to find novel ways of promoting health behaviour change amongst people. Cool, right? It is something I can easily talk about at a party, without boring people!
For once, the detractors were right; a PhD doesn’t pay much, even when you are doing supervised research. Right now, I am living scholarship to scholarship! So internet marketing provides me the perfect opportunity of combining my hidden entrepreneurial skills with my bad habit of stopping people on the street for a chat (only now I don’t have to stop you on the street. I can quickly stop you at the end of this sentence.)
STOP!
While PhD and my freelancing writing job can be suffocating, internet marketing allows me an opportunity to open up. Though I still like both!
I find the whole internet marketing experience rewarding (though not as socially rewarding as my research!) My motivation to succeed stems from my motivation to make fame for myself, and fortune for those close to me. I have ‘simple’ life aspirations – pack my bag, go travelling around Europe, South America and Asia. While I don’t prefer hotels, I would still like an internet connection, a clean toilet and good food. So money would be good.
My parents will be retiring soon, and I have this sense of responsibility to add value to their twilight years – if not by being with them, then by being there for them. Most of the money that I make goes towards supporting my family. After all, we often work for people close to us!
So back to the main question – Why am I here? (Not in the world, dummy, on this program!)
I begged and pleaded Dee to offer me a chance to learn a few things related to online marketing, and Dee liked me enough to offer me a chance. I am happy that I got here, and plan to make the most of it. I am not afraid to share my failures either, so what you read will be an encumbered account of how this coaching program affects me in my marketing endeavour. While I do have a lot of prior knowledge, I come in this program with a clean slate, hoping to absorb, and return as much as I can.
Hope you enjoy the journey.
I know I will.
Neeraj.
